WHOI scientist Colleen Hansel scuba-dives to corals in Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen reefs with a new device that can measure superoxides in the ocean—a critical chemical compound for most living things, but one that is so reactive that it vanishes within 30 seconds after it forms. The device, which she and colleagues invented, is nicknamed DISCO, which stands for DIver-operated Submersible Chemiluminescent sensOr. (Ashlee Lillis, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
